Lee Gennings - February 2007
The weather over the last couple of months has been ridiculous, very warm by anyone’s standards. So thinking about the weather I considered going down the lines of using a bit more bait than I would usually use in January/February. I wasn’t going to use kilos of boilies, but I thought a good few spodfulls of a particle with only a little visual aspect to it would hopefully do the trick on enticing the carp to feed. So David at the Bait & Feed Company sent me something that he thought fit for the job. This was there ready prepared Hemp, Sweet Corn and Bloodworm Extract. This seemed perfect as hopefully the visual Sweet Corn would take the carp’s interest and the scattered particle would keep the fish pre-occupied in the area.

Nightmare Session:
The session I did in January turned out to be a blow, as the wind hit 70mph and made sleeping, re-baiting and spodding an absolute nightmare. I had moved swims by Saturday afternoon as there had been seven shows of carp in half an hour out in front of the stump swim. I flicked out three singles and had chosen to use chod rigs due to me not having a clue about the lake bed out in front of the stumps and not wanting to cause too much disturbance. Pop-up baits were Bait & Feeds Particle 42 soaked in there new Condensed Milk Extract and one rod baited with a Shellfish B5 corker, from Essential Baits. By the time I had set up the wind had died down a little and I managed to spod 15 or so spods out to a clean area just in front of a weed bed at 40 yards range. I changed to a bottom bait Particle 42 for this rod and the other rods stayed on singles. In the night I sadly dropped a fish which came off the baited spot.

All Good:
A week later I was due to do a fishery focus on Cottington Lakes, which turned out far more satisfying. I found a group of about 8 fish tucked up in the set of reeds so I baited the edge of them with small balls of a 50/50 mix of crumbed Camos Trop/Con/Sweet from Premier as this is the bait they supplied for the feature and Particle 42 Ground Bait, with a small amount of the Condensed Milk Extract. About 2 hours after dark I had a take and managed a 15lb common, great little fish.

Bait:
Bait is something that’s always played on my mind and as it comes to winter and the rods stay static for longer in the night, due to you having less daylight hours, I would like to have the utmost confidence in my bait. So after speaking to David at Bait & Feed, for my winter angling I have gone onto their Particle 42 Boilies, pop-ups, ground bait and there new Condensed Milk Extract. The Particle 42 Ground Bait is what it says in the name, it’s made from 42 different seeds and pulses, watch the carp rip up the bottom. The boilies are excellent, and they now have two new exciting flavours, Coconut 42 and Roast Chicken 42. The Condensed Milk Extract is sweet and gloopy and is an excellent additive for the ground bait.
I’m going to try out some of the new Coconut 42 boilies so I’ll let you in on what I think of them next month.
